Botox vs. Fillers — What's the Difference?

They’re often mentioned together, but they do very different things. And knowing the difference helps you understand what you’re actually getting.

Botox works by gently relaxing the facial muscles responsible for expression lines — the ones that crease your forehead, furrow between your brows, and fan out from the corners of your eyes. Results typically last 3–4 months, and many patients find that starting in their mid-20s as a preventive step keeps those lines from becoming permanent.

Dermal Fillers restore volume to areas where time has quietly taken it away — the cheeks, lips, jawline, under-eye hollows, and more. As we age, we lose bone density, fat, and muscle beneath the skin’s surface. Fillers — including trusted brands like Juvederm®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, and Radiesse® — gently replenish that volume. Results can last anywhere from 6 to 24 months depending on the product and area treated.

Both can be done in the same visit, and our providers will always walk you through what makes sense for your face and your goals.

What Getting Treated Actually Feels Like

No lengthy procedures, no significant downtime, and no dramatic recovery.

Botox takes about 15 minutes — a few small injections, no numbing needed, and you’re back to your day. Fillers take a little longer, around 30 minutes, with a topical numbing cream applied beforehand to keep you comfortable. Some mild swelling or redness at the injection sites is completely normal and typically resolves within a day or two. You can ice the area if needed, and most people head straight back to work or their regular routine.

What Changes When You Choose Botox & Fillers

1. You look refreshed without looking “done.” When placed by a skilled, physician-led team, results are subtle and natural — people notice you look great, not that you had something done.

2. The lines that bother you most, soften. Forehead creases, frown lines, crow’s feet, lip lines, neck bands — targeted treatment means you’re not changing your whole face, just addressing what’s been bothering you.

3. Volume comes back where it’s quietly disappeared. Fuller cheeks, a more defined jawline, lips that don’t look thin — small amounts of filler in the right places can make a significant difference in how balanced and youthful your face looks.

4. You feel more like yourself again. That’s really what this is about. Not looking different — looking like you that isn’t worn down by time and stress.

5. Results that work with your schedule. Quick appointments, minimal downtime, and effects that last months mean this fits into real life — not just a special occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Botox® and fillers?

Botox and fillers work differently, but both produce results that help you look younger.

Botox

Botox is an FDA-approved neuromodulator that temporarily diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your face and neck. The injectable solution is made from bacteria called clostridium botulinum and is the most popular cosmetic injectable in the world.

Botox relaxes your facial muscles to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and prevent new ones from developing. The MD Aesthetics team recommends that you start getting Botox in your mid-20s as a preventive procedure.

Fillers

Unlike Botox, which relaxes the muscles responsible for forming wrinkles, fillers are injectable gels that add volume to areas where bone, fat, and muscle have diminished. They reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds on the face.

The MD Aesthetics uses FDA-approved fillers, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, and Radiesse®. Each filler has a unique molecular structure, making certain fillers ideal for specific areas of the face.

During your consultation, your esthetician discusses the best option for you.

Botox treats the most common areas: forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, and the wrinkles around the mouth and neck.

Fillers are best for augmenting volume in areas, including:

  • Cheeks
  • Under your eyes
  • Between your eyebrows
  • Around your temples
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lips
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Hands

Your esthetician can treat you with Botox and fillers in the same session.

During your Botox procedure, your provider injects the targeted muscles in your face using a tiny needle. No numbing is required, and the procedure only takes about 15 minutes.

Your esthetician applies topical anesthesia to the injection site before treatment during your filler procedure to minimize discomfort. Then, they inject the dermal filler into the targeted areas. Your treatment takes about 30 minutes, depending on the filler used and the areas addressed.

It is normal to experience some numbness for several hours after your procedure.

After your procedure, it is common to experience some temporary redness, swelling, and tenderness at your injection sites. You can ice your face immediately after your treatment, as needed.

The procedure doesn’t require any downtime, which allows you to resume your daily activities right away.

Botox results can last 3-4 months, and filler results can last 6-24 months, depending on the type. To schedule an appointment at The MD Aesthetics, book your appointment online or call today.
